Post subject:  Encephalons

Quick point from our last thread.

-Encephalons can perform an number of automated or exclusive tasks for a runner. Kind of like an SK
-The number of tasks is equal to the rating.
-Encephalons would actually use the program ratings of a utility and run it in an automated fashion. requires 1 free action.
-A decker can setup up an impromptu instruction set for the encephalon.
ie analyze file 6, if IC'less download else prompt result.
if there was scramble IC, the decker has it run decrpyt 5.

All of this frees up the decker to perform more searches, deal with combative IC etc.

I would be very interested in both seeing this actually applied in a test game and in seeing what other uses we can come up with for non-matrix stuff.

It's a cool idea, but it's so... novel, it's difficult for me to anticipate how it would be unbalancing or potentially misused.

I don't want to see them becoming over-powerful. As long as anything running through the encephalons receives no dice, I'm ok with it. So yeah, an Analyze 6 program running only 6 dice, that's ok with me. (Is that what you're even asking? we don't really play the whole 'decking' game... ever... :P)

That is exactly what I was implying regarding analyse.

Where as a decker should be rolling his decking skill (completely separate from computers) against the system tn's, for more of a decking one the fly type of feel.

I feel that most deckers with a skill of 6 will be treading lightly around an orange system whereas a decker with 8-9 skill would be attempting red systems.

The rating of the deck, helps with response increases, masking, and combating IC.

I was thinking something slightly different myself, that the types of tasks you set an Encephalon to do could not be ones that involved making tests in any way. Monitored operations on the Matrix for instance could be left to an Encephalon, as once you've made the original test the rest is just sacrificing actions to maintain it. Maybe aiming actions made with a firearm could be added to the list, and any other actions that don't require tests?

Utilities really aren't supposed to contribute dice to a test in SR3; it'd be kind of odd to have them suddenly contribute dice just because the decker isn't paying attention with his real brain at the moment. :)

Any new thoughts here? I'm still opposed to matrix utilities ever contributing dice to a test. That's a rigger thing, isn't it? I don't want any rigger in my decker. :)
